      National ID

      Driver License

Government agencies globally involved in immigration programs are constantly looking to enhance security while improving process efficiencies and optimizing costs.

With the growing trend in adoption of smartcard chips in national ID cards, polycarbonate substrate is an ideal choice to protect the citizens’ physical personalized data with information imbedded in the smartcard chip such as biometrics data, encrypted keys and avenues to communicate with governmental systems electronically. Today, many electronic national IDs (e-IDs) are positioned as multi-purpose identification cards on top of being a means to identification – physically and electronically.

Makrofol® ID polycarbonate films of Covestro help create robust ID card constructions which can withstand a broad temperature range and accommodate industrial pre-printed features with optimized laser engraving. National ID cards leveraging Makrofol® ID films can help realize enhanced quality and reliability using both static and variable government and individual citizen data.

Today, 62 countries are participants of the ICAO Public Key Directory (PKD) program with the aim to facilitate interoperability for electronic passports (e-Passports) across international borders.

Makrofol® ID & Platilon® ID specialty films of Covestro are used in synergy to construct robust passport data pages and hinges to withstand the rigors of the citizen’s international travels.

More and more ePassport programs are incorporating imbedded smart chips within the passport booklet, a polycarbonate data page to safeguard the travelers’ digital personal data as well as an interface to government backend systems for identity verification, adjudication, watch-list checks and more.

      Driver License

      Driver License

Polycarbonate driver licenses offer many advantages, from providing a more secure form of identification to increasing the durability of the driver’s license itself. This can also help minimizing the problem of having additional cards due to avoidable card replacements during the program validity period, which in turn can provide a better experience for the citizens. Driver licenses using polycarbonate substrate with laser engraving are featured prominently in the European Union.

      Border Crossing Cards

      Border Crossing Cards

Border Crossing Cards are best positioned for frequent travelers entering and exiting foreign countries across land and sea borders which require durable identification cards.

More and more identification programs are taking advantage of polycarbonate cards which can enable latest security features during the card construction stage and also through the laser engraving process.

The laser engraving on polycarbonate substrate can use variable personalized data combined with differentiated security features which are unique for each citizen and traveler.

      Innovative Technologies

for Polycarbonate ID Cards & Passport Data Pages

      New Clear Window Solution

New Concept: Thin White High Opaque Clear Window for Secure Polycarbonate Identification Documents

Clear window technology with highly opaque thin white color for polycarbonate ID cards and passport data pages.

Punched window on the polycarbonate card or passport data page does not need to be filled because of its thin altitude. During the lamination process, the transparent layers will merge and the thin hole will be filled without any irregularities on the document surface.

      Covestro Advantage

      • Thinner construction means more security features can be imbedded in the overall card construction
      • High opacity insures quality of defined clear window in higher contrast
      • Reduce cycle time: faster lamination process due to thinner film thickness
      Superlaser PC Film

ID cards and passport data pages using the superlaser polycarbonate film can be laser-engraved with the citizen’s data and photo in a higher contrast than what is possible in standard industry laser-reactive overlay films.

Since the personal data resides in both the overlay and the core, the superlaser three-layer-film-structure constructed as a single layer can provide better protection against forgery and counterfeiting: The laser-personalization penetrates all 3 layers of the film which require forensic analysis to be inspected and reproduced.

Furthermore, the personalization process is faster and less costly compared to conventional production methods. The development of this innovative film is the response of Covestro to current trends for security cards in the market.

      TPU Passport Hinge

      Combined Stiffness with Flexibility

Create a higher level of security for passports – why not?

Multi-layer blown TPU film Platilon® ID 9122 from Covestro applied in passport hinges can make your next generation e-passport safer and more durable. Five-layer Platilon® ID 9122 can excellently bond with polycarbonate and ensure data pages cannot delaminate without destruction of the passport. At the same time, fabric-like properties of TPU enable unlimited bends without the appearance of cracks or breaks. Melt behavior and flexibility of TPU are ideally suited to protect integrated chips and antennas, it can be securely sewn into passports using existing standard methods.
