      As the pace of urbanization accelerates, mobility becomes a critical factor on the streets of tomorrow – both in the business environment and for urbanites travelling on foot, by e-bike, car, bus or train. Will improved and more sustainable mobility help promote growth? We think it does and to ensure a brighter future in the City of Sustainnovation, we need to harness the power and resources of many partners to deliver more sustainable products and services.       Desmophen® NH 1423 & Desmodur® ultra for refinish applications

      Improving work hygiene in automotive bodyshops where coatings are manually sprayed and increasing throughput times are major concerns in the auto refinishing business. Two new Covestro products offer significant improvements for manufacturers of auto refinish coatings – and ultimately for bodyshop personnel as well.

      Newly developed Desmophen® NH 1423 uses advantageous polyaspartic technology to achieve ambient clearcoat curing with no need for additional oven time. This polyaspartic ester’s reduced fumeric acid diethylester (FADEE) content of <0.1% improves workplace hygiene in spraying applications. What’s more, Desmophen® NH 1423 offers better color stability for superior application properties.

      Demodur® ultra combines the advantages of isocyanates technology with enhanced product safety and workplace hygiene. This easy drop-in solution enables <0.1% monomer content throughout the value chain. Both Covestro products are the basis for low-viscosity very high solids systems (up to 250 g/l VOC) and are flexible but scratch-resistant, UV-stable and weather-resistant.

      Desmodur® eco N7300 & Bayhydrol® eco UH 2884 for softfeel coatings

      The look and feel of an automotive interior are a major influence on a consumer’s buying decision. Decorative films are frequently used to give the interior the look & feel of a premium vehicle. While soft-feel coatings play a key role in this, there is also a growing awareness that the interior look & feel should not come at the expense of air quality. A cleaner, bio-based solution is required.

      Covestro developed the Desmodur® eco N 7300 and Bayhydrol® eco UH 2884 water-borne binders to enable soft-feel formulations that have a high renewable carbon content and yet deliver the same performance as petro-based systems. Both are drop-in solutions. Bayhydrol® eco UH 2884 enables 56% renewable content in solids, Desmodur® eco N 7300 70%. The proof of no-compromise quality and performance comes from a film manufacturer who has based innovative new products on the Covestro PU dispersions and confirms that a European premium car OEM has incorporated them into their serial production.

      Dispercoll® U 66 for auto interior adhesives

      Adhesives used in auto interiors increasingly have to meet the demands of premium manufacturers for improved climatic resistance. Applicators will no longer accept any compromises in either the adhesive application or the performance of the trim part. For adhesive manufacturers using water-borne polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) for auto interior lamination adhesives a drop-in solution was required with higher resistance to the stressful climatic conditions of high temperatures and humidity.

      The drop-in solution Covestro developed, Dispercoll® U 66, meets the demand for better climatic resistance than adhesives based on existing PUDs. Collaboration with an adhesive manufacturer led to the development of a new lamination adhesive with a higher bond strength and greater resilience to harsh climatic conditions (e.g. 70° C. and 95% humidity) in the storage of bonded parts. The enhanced durability of adhesives based on Dispercoll® U 66 opens doors to new customers, particularly in the premium auto segment.

      Insqin® for auto interior textiles

      Automotive OEMs are keenly interested in using sustainable and future-proof materials that enable new interior ambient lighting concepts. Moreover, they are not prepared to accept any compromises in durability and indoor air quality.

      Translucent INSQIN® PU has the same quality appearance as leather though at a lower price and displays high mechanical properties, even at lower temperatures compared to PVC. Moreover, INSQIN® gives an auto interior designer greater freedom through a broad range of color-integrating functions and dynamic lighting effects. As a result, INSQIN® is highly appreciated by global brands in the automotive and other end-use industries such as fashion, sport & outdoor, and furniture.

      Dispercoll® C/S adhesive for lightweight seats

      Lightweighting is now one of the dominant trends in the auto industry as manufacturers strive to reduce fuel consumption and emissions through lighter vehicles. Hence automotive seating designers and developers are also looking for new ways of creating ultra-lightweight seats. This goal can only be achieved by smartly combining cutting-edge technologies.

      Dispercoll® C/S proved to be the enabler for the concept of an ultra-lightweight non-woven seat fabric developed by two Covestro cooperation partners Alba tooling & engineering GmbH and csi Verwaltungs GmbH. To realize the seat concept the non-woven fabric needed two seemingly contradictory properties: it had to be both very stiff and have some degree of flexibility for the glued joint to the décor in order to achieve a good balance of mechanical stability and comfort. Another advantage of using Dispercoll® C/S was that the non-woven fabric could be produced in a fast pressing process that allows for series production.

      Bayhydrol® UH 2889 for peelable coating

      Transportation of newly painted components and systems can often lead to accidental scratches or damage that could involve costly rework before handover to the customer. Items such as car body parts and engine hoods are especially challenging due to their high-gloss finishes, where small defects are easily visible. With so many production lines based on just-in-time delivery schedules, quality defects can have serious consequences, which both suppliers and manufacturers are keen to avoid. The challenge was to develop a polyurethane dispersion for peelable coating systems that combined efficiency and low VOCs with flexibility on all sizes of substrates – and did not have the limitations normally associated with such films.

      Water-borne peelable coatings based on Bayhydrol® UH 2889 address the need for temporary protection against scratches, dust and dirt. At the same time, they offer the benefits of very low VOC emissions and efficiency gains through easy application by brush, paint rollers or spray guns, and fast air-drying properties. Moreover, coatings applied in liquid form can be used on all sizes of substrates and remain flexible and peelable at temperatures as low as -15° C.

      Desmodur® eco: Sonnenwagen bio-based coating

      The isocyanate hardener Desmodur® eco N 7300 of Covestro was a key component of the clearcoat. 70 percent of the hardener’s carbon content is sourced from biomass instead of fossil fuels, which reduces the carbon footprint of the clearcoat hardener by around 30 percent – without any compromise on performance and quality.
